Cancellation of Regional Connectivity Program in Mackay region
As a government-owned corporation, QCN is extremely disciplined in how it applies public funding granted in trust to us, to meet our mandate – to break the digital divide in Queensland. This means, at times, having to make the tough decision to no longer pursue programs of work.
In June 2022, we were granted $5.4M from the Australian Government’s Regional Connectivity Program to deliver fixed wireless infrastructure (in partnership with Channel Wireless) to Mackay regional townships; Finch Hatton, Pinnacle, Gargett, Eungella and the surrounding areas of Marian and Mirani. This followed our successful implementation of a similar solution to the townships of Bluff, Duaringa, and Dingo in the central highlands of Queensland with funds provided under Round 1 of the programs.
Since commencing the rollout of the Round 2 program, QCN has faced site access difficulties which have delayed the delivery of the project. Additionally, during this time, the Australian Government has provided funding to NBN to complete upgrades in these locations, and the communities will benefit from the significant upgrades to the NBN fixed wireless network.
QCN is disappointed that we can no longer continue with the rollout, however, we believe that this is the best outcome for residents and means that our mandate – to break the digital divide in Queensland – can still be met. And this is what is most important.
